Padma Bhushan N. Gopalaswami

Shri N. Gopalaswami, the 15th Chief Election Commissioner of India, was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2015. As an Indian Administrative Services officer from the 1966 Gujarat cadre, while serving as the Secretary of Culture, he secured UNESCO’s approval for Darasuram Gangaikonda Chola Temple and Bimbetka as World Heritage sites. He also played a key role in UNESCO recognizing ‘VEDIC Chanting’ as part of the World’s Oral Heritage. Additionally, the government appointed him to lead a committee for envisioning Sanskrit education. Gopalaswami’s contributions encompass electoral administration, cultural preservation, and education, earning him national and international acclaim.
